Applications Engineer – Electrical, Controls & Instrumentation
Ripley, Derbyshire | £30,000 – £50,000 DOE | Permanent
Applications Engineering | Controls & Instrumentation | Power Systems | Energy & Industrial Projects
Are you an experienced Applications Engineer, Proposals Engineer or Electrical Engineer looking for a role where you can use your technical expertise to develop solutions, influence projects and work directly with customers?
Our client is looking for an Applications Engineer with a strong electrical engineering bias, particularly across controls and instrumentation, to join their growing Sales team.
This is a technically challenging and commercially focused position where you'll take customer requirements and develop them into practical, commercially viable engineering solutions.
You'll be involved from the initial customer enquiry and technical discussions through solution development, equipment selection, costing and proposal preparation to contract award.
Working across complex energy and industrial systems, you'll have the opportunity to apply your electrical, controls and instrumentation expertise while working closely with customers, suppliers and multidisciplinary engineering teams.
The Role
As Applications Engineer, you will:
Review customer specifications, drawings, schematics, data sheets and technical requirements
Develop electrical, controls and instrumentation solutions in response to customer enquiries
Produce electrical concepts, calculations and supporting technical documentation
Develop and review single-line diagrams, load schedules, cable schedules and associated documentation
Assess requirements relating to AC/DC power systems, electrical distribution, protection, control and instrumentation interfaces
Support the selection of electrical, control and instrumentation equipment
Work with suppliers and manufacturers to obtain technical and commercial information
Support estimating, costing and tender preparation
Prepare detailed technical proposals and identify suitable alternative solutions where appropriate
Attend customer meetings and provide technical support throughout the sales process
Liaise closely with internal engineering and project teams to ensure proposed solutions are practical and achievable
Maintain accurate records of enquiries, proposals and customer requirements
Contribute to product development, standardisation, cost reduction and continuous improvement
What We're Looking For
We're particularly interested in speaking with engineers who can combine strong electrical knowledge with commercial awareness and confident customer communication.
Ideally, you will have:
At least 2 years' relevant experience within Electrical Engineering, Applications Engineering, Proposals Engineering or Technical Sales in a relevant industry
An HND or equivalent qualification in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline
A strong electrical engineering bias, with particular experience or interest in controls and instrumentation
Good understanding of AC/DC power systems, electrical distribution, protection, control and instrumentation
Experience working within industrial, energy or other complex engineering environments
The ability to interpret technical specifications, drawings, schematics and engineering requirements
Experience with electrical schematics, single-line diagrams, load schedules, cable schedules and protection systems would be advantageous
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Good commercial awareness and an understanding of customer requirements
Excellent communication skills with the confidence to liaise directly with customers and suppliers
The ability to manage multiple enquiries, priorities and deadlines
A full UK driving licence and willingness to travel when required
Experience within gas turbines, carbon capture, hydrogen, energy recovery, power generation, power grid, water or nuclear would be highly advantageous.
Why Consider This Opportunity?
This is an opportunity to move beyond purely design-focused engineering and become involved in projects from the earliest stages, helping shape the technical solution before a contract is awarded.
You'll combine engineering, problem-solving, customer interaction and commercial involvement while gaining exposure to complex and interesting energy and industrial projects.
In return, you can expect:
£30,000 – £50,000 salary, dependent on experience
Competitive bonus scheme
5% matched pension scheme
Private healthcare
EV salary sacrifice scheme
Cycle to Work salary sacrifice scheme
Exposure to complex UK and international engineering projects
A varied role combining technical engineering, customer interaction and commercial activity
Career development and opportunities to broaden your technical and commercial expertise
